ADAM LEDGER, NEVE MCKENNA, LUNA SHINKINS, WILL THOMSON

Animalgamation, a collaborative exhibit exploring themes of the Anthropocene through the digital, extinction and hybrid creatures. The exhibition aims to transform the landscape of General Practice through sculpture, installation and video, a representation of how humans constantly transform the landscape of Earth. Visually reminiscent of eldritch horror with added whimsy and digitalisation, Animalgamation aims to make the audience feel as though they have stepped into a living creature that houses an amalgamation of art.

Adam Ledger is a multidisciplinary artist specialising in video art. Inspired by surrealism and horror in cinema, he uses a combination of found footage, mixed-media animation, visual effects and sculpture to create experimental short films. These skills are seen throughout the show within the creatures created, each of them provoking a sense of curiosity and discomfort. What is hybrid creatures such as these came to be due to the actions of humans? As a part of the collaborative sculpture, Adam has gone in a different direction, bringing the creature to life in one of his animations. One of Adam’s creatures was also a part of the poster, inspiring Neve to create an image with it as the centre.

Neve McKenna explores autobiographical themes of trauma and environmental degradation through highly saturated and collaged videos alongside Aphex Twin inspired audio. She aims to convey texture through digital imagery and audio. This is seen through her compilation of videos ‘Animalgamation’ each video containing narratives surrounding environmental destruction, fears of the end of the world, war and an overall sense of grieve and guilt. She also created expanding foam sculptures resembling entrails that encase and house the screens displaying these videos. Finally as a part of a collaborative sculpture, she used a taxidermy fox head to make a brand new chimera like creature, made to look ornamental, a juxtaposition to the degradation of the environment and living beings, created and caused by human beings.

Luna Shinkins aka Snot Grrrl, is a queer, neurodivergent artist.  Maximalism, chaos, DIY, untidiness, janky gesticulations and the unfinished merged with absurdism, whimsy, the body and saturated colours to create the primary visual aesthetic signifiers of their work. Personal and fantastical narratives, abject pink, women of myth & legend, esotericism and good ol’ hijinks are subjects of exploration. The tail of the collaborative sculpture was crafted by Luna, bringing together the final details of the body!

Will René Thomson’s work primarily focuses on documentation, conversation, and investigation within an ecological context. These explorations are driven by the concept of “the landscape as an entity” – a consideration that the landscape, in a symbolic context, acts like a holobiont. His articulation of this concept aims to encourage an empathetic dialogue between the land, animals, humans, structures, elements, and foliage to foster a mutually beneficial, sustainable engagement with all aspects of the land. This is reflected in the abstract creatures that Will has created, each of them being how he visualises extinction. As well as this, he gave the collaborative chimera its body, shaping it from just a head to a cohesive creature, the creature would not have been a creature without Will’s knowledge on creature creation!
