Scarborough Macabre is an off-season sojourn to the seaside, in which artist Melody Phelan- Clark regurgitates the strange and sinister nature of the British coast, once the summer season has passed.

Bustling beaches are replaced with empty arcades and ghostly shores, as attractions are shuttered and the seaside enters a state of sleep.

In Scarborough Macabre, Phelan Clark reminisces on half term family holidays to Scarborough, North Yorkshire, and returns to the town as an adult. This work also feeds from the sea -based scares of horror fiction, namely M.R James' Oh, Whistle And I'll Come To You, My Lad, and the work of Scarbrough - born Susan Hill, who says of the location:

'I am in the now and then simultaneously, transfixed again by the gliding snake cables of the cliff tram. Time means nothing. Scarborough is out of time. It means everything.'

The opening event is Friday 7th February from 6 - 8pm, refreshments are provided and all are welcome.

The exhibition is also open Saturday 8th February, Wednesday 12th February, and Sunday 16th February, from 11am - 4pm on all days.

Oliver Ventress and Madara Vimba are excited to introduce ‘BASE’: a project to build a new artist-led space and studios in the city of Lincoln.

The project is built around the idea that every artist needs a “base” - a place to ground their ideas, grow their practice, and connect with others. BASE is aiming to provide affordable studios, facilities, and workshops, addressing Lincoln’s need for accessible ‘dirty’ workspaces.

Join us at @generalpractice for GROUNDWORKS on Friday 17th January 2025 from 18:00 and 18th - 19th January by appointment - drop us a DM.

What is GROUNDWORKS?

Not your typical round-table chat - this is an installation of ideas and visions.

What to expect?

We’re working to secure a space and funding for BASE, and we want your input to help shape the vision. Come along with your thoughts and ideas - write them on the walls, build your ideal base, and share what you want to see more of in Lincoln.

Why join?

We recognise the value of community and collaboration, and we want your input to shape the BASE we’re building together.
