Charlie Cook: Echoed (Segments)

Echoed (Segments) is an exhibition by Charlie Cook (@charliemaraa), featuring paintings which revisit pre-existing work exploring the relationship between space and memory. This new body of work aims to portray memories of the paintings themselves, fetishising iconography of places as they are worn down and degraded by nostalgia.
Many of the new paintings aim to explore the artists’ personal memories and their relationship with queer collective memory, including imagery of fetish and the trans body as a vehicle to portray foggy recollections. In doing this, Echoed (Segments) poses critical questions surrounding the relationship between nostalgia, memory and the body, such as:
How faithfully can memories be portrayed?
What role do our bodies and senses play in retaining these memories?
How can painting as a practice draw these connections between nostalgia and the body?
Utilising overlapping and repeating imagery as well as transparent materials to visually address these questions, Echoed (Segments) allows the viewer to reflect on their own experiences with memory, space and the body.
